Elizabeth (Liz) Ashton
Having a calling of sorts, I returned to school in my late-20's, and achieved a successful diploma in
Early Childhood Care and Education at Mount Royal University in Calgary, AB. When it was time to raise a family, I would do so with staying at home and opening a licensed family childcare. Both my children were born in BC and we lived on the Sunshine Coast for nearly five years before returning to Alberta.
Opened in January 2005, Monkey Tree has remained with the same name - a real tree too, and no monkeys live in it! It started as a successful family daycare in Halfmoon Bay on the Sunshine Coast, BC and continued in Airdrie, Alberta on the prairies. I have always dedicated my family first, and with this in the forefront, it has allowed me to remain at home with my children and still offer needed childcare services to the community.
Although our time in Alberta ended in 2013, I decided in 2015 to carry on with the home based care program for children and to accommodate my strong desire to be close to home, family, and my outdoor community. Now, Erik is in grade 9, Sophie is in grade 6, and we have a three year old English Springer Spaniel named Bella. My husband Chuck also works from is home office. Bella joins us on our daily forest explorations; it is her happy place too!
I am the primary facilitator at Monkey Tree, to oversee daily program planning with much involvement from the children and parents. Focusing on the children’s interests and direction will enable emergent curriculum with a great sense of belonging.
The program is carried out with professionalism and detailed focus. My educational background includes a Diploma with Honours in Early Childhood Care and Education at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. My professional attitude while volunteering, working with children with special needs and children at risk, and an outstanding academic record enabled me to win the honour of the Valedictorian Award for the entire graduating class of 2002 at Mount Royal University. Also to my credit are numerous awards relating to the field of Early Childhood Care and Education, and the privilege of working with the Canadian Association of Young Children from 2000-2010.
My greatest work experience, personal and professional development were achieved at Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS). What began as a volunteer project for a school assignment manifested into a key position with One World Child Development Centre, an integral program provided by CUPS, which is still operating today. I was able to focus all my talents and skills in the program. I was a volunteer with the Family Resource Centre, an Early Childhood Educator, along with being co-creator of programming for the drop-in childcare service, the summer camp program, and the administrative duties attached to developing the Service Plan for One World Child Development Centre. The children and families involved with One World are socially and economically marginalized by society and live in poverty. These individuals are considered at risk and the services that are provided by One World helped them to develop the skills needed to be successful.
